Bachelor in Optometry and Vision Sciences

1. Title of Program:

The title of the program is Bachelor in Optometry and Vision Sciences that will be written as BOVS in short form.

2. Introduction to the Program:

WORLD COUNCIL OF OPTOMETRY defines Optometrists as “the primary health care practitioners of the eye and visual system, who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of ocular problems, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.”

Vision impairment and blindness are one of the major health problems. Around 2.2 billion of people have visual impairment and half of them are preventable. Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. It was estimated that refractive correction and cataract surgery only can cut out 8 out of 10 visual impaired persons. Besides this, around 25% of the world population is presbyopic and needs some form of optical correction. More than 260 billion of annual productivity loss is due to only uncorrected myopia and presbyopia. Hence human resources specialized in eye care that is focused on optical correction and dispensing and other vision related specialty is a key person to reduce the preventable blindness.

Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic assistants are the major eye care practitioners currently in Nepal. The population to eye care practitioner ratio in Nepal is well below the standard set by “WHO” for prevention of blindness. Optometrists carry out eye examinations and solve eye problems specially related to vision reducing the workload of ophthalmologist and also the cost of eye care services making it sustainable and affordable in developing countries like Nepal.  Production of optometrists, therefore, helps not only to overcome the constraints of eye health manpower, but also economic constraints within the country. Hence this course of BOVS, an eight semester (four years) academic course is designed to produce competent and well trained skilled optometrists.

4. Goal of the Program:
