Title of Program: It is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery that will be written as MBBS in short.
Purbanchal University & Its Medical Program
Purbanchal University (PU) was established in 1993 with the aim to develop higher education in the country in a decentralized manner and to expand the opportunities of higher education into other parts of the country as well. The prime role of this University is to act as an agent for the promotion of socioeconomic transformation in Nepal through quality education appropriate for quality life and sustainable future. Since its establishment, the University has been motivated by its fundamental objective of preserving, refining, inventing, adopting, extending and transmitting knowledge in an environment that fosters free inquiry and open scholarly debate leading to all-encompassing development of the rural people, their economy and environment by improving health status of marginalized community as well as overall reducing morbidity.
The establishment of Purbanchal University as a public institution has come up as a relief to both urban and rural school graduates wishing to attain higher education within the country. With its reasonable cost for education and expansive premise of over 545 hectares of land in rural settings of Province number 1 of Nepal, the University is geared up to play a substantial role in the academic development, quality education and research.
Objectives of MBBS Program
By the end of this program, the student should be able to
i. Make a clear concept of structures and function of human body in health and disease
ii. Apply a holistic approach to the practice of modern medicine
iii. Diagnose and manage common health problems at individual and community level
iv. Upgrade his or her own medical knowledge through regular research
v. Apply appropriate technology for clinical diagnosis and develop habits of rational use of drugs
vi. Practice curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative medicine
vii. Realize his/her limitations and refer patient to the higher center whenever required
viii. Identify and initiate treatment of all the life-threatening emergencies
ix. Treat patients with respect and dignity maintaining high standard of ethical practice
x. Manage carefully medicolegal problems provide leadership to the health team
xi. Demonstrate an open attitude to alternative medicines, if possible, integrate it
xii. Participate in national and international health programs
xiii. Demonstrate preparedness to face various natural calamities
Roles and Responsibilities of MBBS Graduate
The MBBS graduates must be able to fulfil the following roles and responsibilities appropriately and effectively as a:
1. Clinician who:
a) Is compassionate towards people, patients and self; and provides preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative cares with compassion and respect,
b) Provides life-saving measures in emergencies and manage emergency health issues,
c) Is able to diagnose and manage common diseases and health issues,
d) Recognizes issues that require referral and does so.
2. Leader who:
a) Understands health as a fundamental right of the citizens,
b) Respects and acknowledges the importance of every member of a health care team,
c) Is able to lead a health care team and system that s/he is assigned to,
d) Is able to collect, analyze, synthesize and communicate health the meaning of data properly,
e) Is able to act as an educator for the health care team and the community,
3. Professional who:
a) Is committed to excellence,
b) Is ethical, responsive and accountable to patients, society and the profession.
4. Committed learner who:
a) acknowledges learning as a lifelong process and is committed to continuous improvement of knowledge, skills and attitude,
